Generational Trauma

In this album, I explore the emotional journey through the complexities of life. Each piece represents different stages of growth, from the confusion of youth to the painful losses and struggles of adulthood, all the while addressing the ongoing fight to survive, endure, and make sense of a world filled with trauma and uncertainty. This album reflects not just personal experiences but shared struggles, with some pieces inspired by my students’ journeys through mental health, love, and loss. At its core, the album is about coping, surviving, and finding meaning despite the weight of generational trauma.

Pieces of a Shared Journey.

  • I Don’t Know What I Want (Jan.01 2025): This poem captures the confusion and uncertainty that often accompanies growing up. It's a reflection of the struggle many face when trying to understand what they want in life. The poem emphasizes that it's okay not to have everything figured out and that decisions, whether right or wrong, often lead to valuable lessons that make sense only in hindsight.
  • What’s Wrong with Me? (Jan.15 2025): This poem addresses the pressure of measuring one's worth based on external expectations and societal standards. It speaks to the internal conflict many experience, trying to mask their true feelings in order to meet those expectations. It explores the emotional toll of untreated mental health struggles and the overwhelming sense that something is wrong when, in reality, the problem is societal and generational.
  • Our Last Goodbye (Feb.01 2025): This poem reflects on the bittersweet nature of farewells, exploring the emotional weight of an ending that lingers long after the moment has passed. It delves into the complexities of love and loss, capturing how deep connections can leave lasting marks even when distance and time grow between people. The poem speaks to those moments when we’re forced to let go, whether through separation, change, or the inevitable distance that time creates, and the unresolved emotions that stay with us, even when life moves forward.
  • My Lament to Adoni (Feb.14 2025): A deep exploration of faith and doubt, this poem reflects the universal struggle with spiritual questioning during difficult times. It highlights the experience of calling out for guidance but feeling unanswered, only to eventually come to terms with the fact that the answers may not be forthcoming. It's about the internal battle between hope and silence.
  • El Retorno al Amor (Mar.01 2025): This poem explores the complex and sometimes painful journey of love. It reflects the tension between holding on to past experiences and learning to open up again. It speaks to the way love can heal, but also to the emotional scars that remain. This poem is about finding balance in love, letting go of old wounds, and embracing new possibilities.
  • Happy Pills (Mar.15 2025): A raw reflection on the use of medication for mental health, this poem questions whether pharmaceutical solutions truly address the root of the problems or just mask them. It examines the conflict between relying on substances for relief and the deeper struggle of trying to cope with mental health challenges in an imperfect system.
  • Why Does That Tree Stand? (Apr.02 2025): Using the metaphor of a tree, this poem reflects on the burden of life and the resilience required to keep going. It speaks to the shared experience of bearing the weight for others, whether family, friends, or communities, while feeling the strain and emotional exhaustion of it all. The tree stands because others depend on it, even when its own strength is fading.
  • Against Myself (Apr.20 2025): The final poem of the album is a meditation on internal conflict, self-worth, and the legacy we leave behind. It reflects the universal fear of being forgotten and the desire to make a lasting impact. This poem encapsulates the struggle of wondering if any of the pain and endurance truly matter, acknowledging the uncertainty that comes with trying to find meaning in life’s challenges.

A Reflection on Endurance.

Generational Trauma is about more than just personal experiences. It’s a reflection on the shared human struggle to cope with the emotional, mental, and spiritual challenges that life throws at us. It speaks to the universal need for survival and understanding, while also grappling with the idea that, despite our best efforts, we may never truly know the impact we have on the world. Ultimately, this album is a journey of resilience, endurance, and acceptance, both of ourselves and of the circumstances beyond our control.
